Franchino Gaffurio
Messe vol. 1
edited by Valeria Mannoia

(Musica mensurale, 3)

29,7 x 21 cm; XXIV, 76 pp.
Introduzione e apparato critico in italiano e inglese

Franchino Gaffurio (1451-1522) was a major figure in the Italian musical Renaissance. His treatises have been hugely discussed, yet his music has been largely ignored. This book of Gaffurio’s Masses comes after those of his motets and Magnificats and opens up a four-volume collection that is going to make a significant part of his opus available, thus allowing late-15 th -century music lovers to perform and enjoy this fascinating repertoire. It also forms Volume 3 of the series, La musica sacra di Franchino Gaffurio (“Musica mensurale” series), a product of the Ex CATheDRA (Excellent Composers And Theorists During the Renaissance Age) research project by the Società Italiana di Musicologia.

Valeria Mannoia studied Modern Literature (Catania University), Musicology (Pavia-Cremona University), and Baroque violin (E.F. Dall’Abaco Conservatory, Verona), and got a Literary and Music Sciences doctorate in 2019 at the Pavia-Cremona University, under Prof. Rodobaldo Tibaldi. She is currently a research fellow at the Pavia-Cremona University, where she is currently teaching while following the project, “The reception of Italian sacred music in 17 th -century Flemish editions”. As a member of the Ex CATheDRA research group, she is editing Gaffurio’s Masses. She is also a co-editor of the «Bullettino di Studi Belliniani» (Centro Studi Belliniani and Fondazione Bellini, Catania). Her book, Tra Florilegi, Promptuaria e Viridaria. La ricezione del mottetto italiano nelle antologie tedesche del Seicento (Anthology Digital Publishing, 2023) is forthcoming. Her main research fields are the European reception of Italian sacred music and historically informed performance practice.
