Giovanni Battista Sammartini
Sinfonia in do maggiore J-C 1
edited by Paolo Calandrino

(Instrumental Music, 25)

29,7 x 21 cm; XXXII, 30 pp.
Intro and Apparatus in Italian and English

Giovanni Battista Sammartini’s Symphony in C Major, J-C 1, has no modern edition and no recording. Historical information in the thematic catalogue is scarce; few manuscript sources exist to date. Hence, this edition aims to restore a valuable work that its contemporaries had appreciated. This is proven by the copy intended for the Kongelige Teater in Copenhagen, where it was being played as an opera overture, as well as by the one in the Doksy collection and the one housed in a monastery near Innsbruck, possibly intended for music students at Stams Abbey. Nor can we rule out that it was also inserted into other composers’ works, back in those years when such borrowing or reworking practices were common usage. The present work is opened by a reconstructing, on the one hand, the Milan environment and Sammartini’s role in it, and on the other hand, the network of relationships that allowed to circulate his music in Europe.

Paolo Calandrino is a pianist and musicologist, graduated in jazz piano from the Milan Conservatory. He taught in French-speaking Swiss cantonal schools from 2016 to 2019. In 2021, he earned a Master's Degree in Historical, Critical, and Analytical Music Disciplines from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, Milan. He published a scholarly edition of Alessandro Rolla's Violin Concerto BI 511 for the Concerti e Sinfonie 1780-1840 series of the Società Italiana di Musicologia. In 2024, he took part in the conference, “The Demonic in Paganini’s Time — Music, Art, and Literature,” organized by the Paganini Center for Research and Teaching, contributing a paper on Marschner's Der Vampyr.
